Bezzera Hobby review: compact power, manual temperature work

For compact manual performance Bezzera Hobby 01 compact espresso machine in stainless steel

The Bezzera Hobby 01 makes a convincing case at the $799 US price checked September 17, 2026: commercial-size coffee hardware, a three-liter tank and unusually energetic steam in a narrow body. Buy it only if a thermostat routine and single-boiler refill sequence sound like acceptable craft rather than missing features.

My assessment

Substantial compact hardware whose steam strength is easier to document than its brew-temperature repeatability.

02Start with the architecture

A compact single boiler with unusually serious steam

The Bezzera Hobby 01 is a manual, reservoir-fed espresso machine built around a 0.25-liter boiler, a vibration pump, a commercial-size group and a three-way solenoid valve. Bezzera lists a three-liter tank, 1100-watt element and a dedicated boiler-refill button. The current chassis is only 220 millimeters wide, which gives it a persuasive answer for a small kitchen: conventional 58 mm coffee hardware without the width of a heat exchanger or dual boiler. [source] [source]

That short specification can mislead in two directions. The Hobby is not an appliance-style shortcut. It does not grind, time, dose volumetrically or show brew temperature. It also should not be dismissed as a weak starter machine. The articulated two-hole steam wand and small, energetic boiler make milk performance a central strength in retailer demonstrations. The price checked at Whole Latte Love on September 17, 2026 was $799, with a one-year seller warranty shown on the listing. Price, coverage and stock can change. [source] [source]

The short decision: choose Hobby when compactness, sturdy conventional hardware and fast manual steaming matter more than factory temperature control. Choose a Profitec GO when a PID, pressure gauge and visible shot timer justify the higher price. Choose the Rancilio Silvia when its service ecosystem and established routine carry more weight than the Hobby's steam pace.

Research boundary: Coffeedant has not brewed or steamed on this machine. Timings quoted below belong to named demonstrations and are not presented as laboratory results.

03The first week

Build a safe boiler routine before chasing flavor

Before first heating, follow the supplied regional instructions and make sure the boiler contains water. The dedicated refill control is not an optional convenience after steaming. Steam removes water from a very small boiler, and the owner must restore the correct fill before leaving the machine. If pump sound changes, flow stops, water appears under the case, the safety device vents unexpectedly or an electrical protection device trips, switch off, unplug when safe, close any water source and use qualified service. A dramatic forum post is one anecdote, but it correctly reinforces the rule that pressure and mains electricity deserve a conservative response. [source] [source] [source]

  1. Days one and two: learn filling, boiler priming, brew controls, steam control, the three-way exhaust and shutdown. Use water that fits Bezzera and local-service guidance.
  2. Days three and four: lock in the warmed portafilter, choose one basket and coffee, weigh dose and beverage, then adjust only grind until flow becomes repeatable.
  3. Days five and six: write down one warmup and thermostat-cycle routine. Compare shots only when the machine begins in a similar state.
  4. Day seven: make the largest normal order, including milk and boiler refill, then decide whether the serial workflow suits the household.

A scale and timer are more useful first purchases than decorative accessories. Use a grinder with small, repeatable espresso adjustments, and reserve budget for water, cleaning and service. A nominal 58 mm diameter does not guarantee every accessory has the correct geometry.

Espresso: capable hardware, thermostat-bound repeatability

The 58 mm group, conventional portafilter and three-way valve provide a serious foundation. The valve relieves group pressure after the shot, allowing a drier puck and detergent backflush when the instructions permit. The limitation is not basket diameter. It is the absence of a displayed brew-temperature set point. A thermostat cycles the small boiler across a band, so two shots started at different points in that cycle can receive different thermal conditions even when dose, grind and yield match.

Begin with a medium-roast espresso and one basket. A sensible editorial starting point is a dose appropriate to that basket and roughly twice the dose mass in the cup. Stop by scale, not by cup appearance. If the shot runs quickly and tastes thin or sharp, grind finer while holding dose and target yield steady. If it crawls and tastes dry, grind coarser. Only after puck preparation and flow are repeatable should the owner investigate heat timing or change the beverage ratio. These are general dialing principles, not Coffeedant Hobby results.

For lighter coffee, fixed thermostat control provides fewer deliberate variables than a PID machine. Longer warmup, a fully heated portafilter and a repeatable flush can reduce variation, but they do not create a numeric set point. Buyers who enjoy a consistent medium-roast recipe may never see that as a problem. Buyers who rotate coffees and want to record temperature alongside dose and yield should price the Profitec GO before ordering aftermarket controls.

Milk: impressive pace with little reaction time

The Hobby's steam system is unusually forceful for this compact single-boiler class. Whole Latte Love's demonstration reported steam readiness in 84 seconds and heating five ounces of milk to 140 degrees Fahrenheit in 14 seconds. Those numbers belong to one commercial demonstration with its milk, fill level, settings and technique. They are useful evidence of potential, not guaranteed times for a new owner. [source] [source]

Fast steam gives a beginner less time to correct wand position. Start with cold milk, an appropriate pitcher and enough volume to see circulation. Purge condensate, introduce a small amount of air near the beginning, then submerge just enough to keep the milk rolling. Stop before the target serving temperature because thermal momentum continues briefly. Wipe the wand and purge it immediately, before residue cooks onto the two-hole tip.

The small boiler still performs jobs in sequence. The owner brews, commands steam heat, waits, textures milk and then refills/cools the boiler for the next coffee. It cannot extract and steam simultaneously. The first cappuccino can feel quick; the third reveals the architecture. A household making one or two milk drinks may accept the ritual. A household serving a breakfast queue should compare a heat exchanger or dual boiler rather than assuming a stronger wand solves every delay.

Alternative milks vary by formulation, so repeat one brand and amount while learning. Unexpected pressure behavior, leaking or electrical symptoms require a stop and qualified diagnosis.

Workflow: direct switches, hidden thermal state

Hobby has few controls to memorize: power, brewing, steam and the dedicated boiler-refill function, with a valve for steam. That makes each action visible. It does not make the full workflow automatic. The operator must manage warmup, thermostat state, grind, dose, distribution, tamp, shot yield, transition to steam, wand cleaning, boiler refill and the return toward brew temperature.

Top access is the other daily constraint. A three-liter reservoir reduces fill frequency, but it must still be inspected, cleaned and reached. Measure vertical clearance and avoid pouring blindly near electrical controls. The drip tray and three-way discharge need regular emptying, especially when flushing and backflushing. A small body does not mean a tiny wet-work footprint.

The practical trial is two drinks from cold start. Time the whole sequence, including grinding, heat management, steaming, refill and cleanup. If the second drink feels like an enjoyable craft routine, Hobby fits. If it feels like negotiating with the appliance before work, a quick-heating thermoblock or dual boiler will probably create more daily value.

Build and service: dense, conventional and revision-sensitive

Bezzera specifies an AISI 304 stainless version alongside matte black, white and red finishes. At ten kilograms in a 220-millimeter-wide case, the current Hobby is materially substantial. The commercial group, brass-boiler description from the current US retailer, solenoid valve and replaceable hydraulic components are familiar to espresso technicians. The official 2025 parts catalog is particularly valuable because it exposes assemblies rather than presenting the machine as a sealed appliance. [source] [source] [source]

Parts drawings do not guarantee local stock, economical labor or owner-safe repairs. Before buying, identify an authorized or experienced Bezzera technician, ask whether bench fees and shipping are covered, and record the seller's written warranty. Whole Latte Love showed one year of parts and labor on the checked US listing, but another seller or country can apply different terms. Keep the invoice, serial number and water-treatment records.

Revision control matters more than the general name. Older reviews and parts listings refer to Hobby generations with different boiler descriptions. Match parts by exact model, rating plate and catalog revision. A generic “Hobby gasket” found through search can fit one assembly and be wrong for another. This is also why older reliability anecdotes cannot be transferred automatically to Hobby 01.

Inspect a delivered machine for shipping damage, tray fit, wand movement and leaks. Electrical, internal-pressure or abnormal-boiler symptoms require shutdown and qualified service.

Features: the useful essentials and almost no feedback

Hobby's useful feature list is short: commercial-size group and portafilter, three-way solenoid, manual brew control, articulated two-hole steam wand, three-liter removable tank and a dedicated boiler-refill button. The solenoid supports cleaner post-shot pressure release and maintenance. The large tank reduces interruptions. The refill button makes the boiler transition more explicit than on some traditional single boilers. [source] [source] [source]

There is no factory PID, brew-pressure gauge, shot timer, programmable dose, preinfusion program, rotary pump, direct-water connection or simultaneous brewing and steaming. A separate scale supplies the most important missing feedback. A phone timer can supply the other. If a buyer immediately plans a PID, pressure gauge and custom controls, the complete modified price should be compared with a factory-integrated alternative.

For one manual espresso and a cappuccino, direct switches and a powerful wand may be enough. Buyers who want to log temperature or multitask should choose more feedback.

Value: strong hardware at $799, with a control premium elsewhere

At the checked $799 US price, Hobby sits above common entry machines and below most factory-PID single boilers. It offers a compact case, three-liter reservoir, commercial-size group, substantial build and steam capability that can reduce the urge for an immediate machine upgrade. That is persuasive value when the buyer accepts thermostat management. [source] [source]

The purchase is not an $799 espresso system. Add a grinder capable of fine repeatable adjustment, scale, water plan, cleaning products and coffee. A better grinder beside Hobby is usually more valuable than spending the same amount on cosmetic group accessories. If the total budget cannot support both, a less expensive machine with the stronger grinder can produce the more satisfying path.

Profitec GO costs more but integrates PID temperature control, pressure feedback and a shot timer. Rancilio Silvia offers a larger installed base and familiar service history but retains thermostat surfing in stock form. Gaggia Classic Evo Pro is less expensive in many markets and has a large modification community, while its own generation and boiler questions require exact-model research. Value depends on which tradeoff the owner will encounter every morning.

Used Hobby pricing needs a repair reserve. Ask for the rating plate, cold-start video, brew flow, steam, refill function, leaks, water history and invoices. Forum failures have no denominator and cannot define the population.

10The long view

Clean the coffee path, protect the boiler and keep records

After each session

Rinse basket and portafilter, brush loose grounds from the group, wipe and purge the steam wand, empty the tray when needed and restore the boiler after steam according to Bezzera's instructions. Do not leave milk on the tip or lock the portafilter brutally against the gasket.

Periodic care

Use the blind-filter and detergent procedure only as the applicable instructions direct. Wash the removable reservoir and tray, inspect the shower screen and group gasket, and keep vents clear. Water chemistry should be planned with the manufacturer, retailer or service technician. Blindly descaling a boiler and valve system can move deposits into narrower paths or create incomplete rinsing.

Useful first upgrades

An accurate scale, espresso-capable grinder, fitting tamper and basic cleaning kit deserve priority. Buy a precision basket, bottomless handle or alternative steam tip only to solve a diagnosed problem. Internal pressure or temperature modifications change the safety, warranty and service conversation.

Owner evidence in proportion

Reddit and Home-Barista discussions identify recurring questions: whether Hobby is a worthwhile step above Gaggia, how much technique the thermostat asks, and how to respond to abnormal electrical or boiler behavior. They cannot calculate a reliability rate because forum populations are self-selecting and usage is unknown. [source] [source] [source]

Before a used purchase

Confirm revision, voltage, accessories, water history and parts availability. Unknown electrical or boiler history justifies professional inspection and a repair reserve.

Bezzera Hobby 01 questions answered

Does the Bezzera Hobby have a PID?

No. The current Hobby 01 uses thermostat control and does not display a selectable brew temperature.

Can Hobby brew and steam at the same time?

No. Its single boiler changes from brew work to steam work, then must be refilled and returned toward brew temperature.

What is the current boiler size?

Bezzera lists 0.25 liters for Hobby 01. Older reviews can describe other capacities and materials, so identify a used machine by revision.

Is the portafilter 58 mm?

Current manufacturer and retailer sources identify a commercial-size group and 58 mm hardware. Confirm ear geometry before buying cross-brand accessories.

Is it good for a beginner?

It can teach manual espresso well, but the strong steam and thermostat cycle demand attention. A beginner seeking automation should compare quicker guided machines.

How many milk drinks can it make?

It can make repeated drinks, but each brew, steam, refill and recovery step happens in sequence. The practical limit is the owner’s tolerance for that queue.

What was the checked US price?

$799 at Whole Latte Love on September 17, 2026. Price, stock and warranty can change.

Hobby or Profitec GO?

Hobby for lower cost, compactness and strong steam. GO for factory PID control, pressure feedback and a shot timer.

Why I trust the verdict

What the evidence lets me say with confidence

I started with Bezzera’s current Hobby 01 page, brochure and July 2025 parts catalog, then checked the current US listing and its written warranty. I separated present specifications from an older independent Hobby test rather than blending boiler sizes. Espresso, steam and workflow conclusions were cross-checked against a detailed demonstration, a four-machine comparison and three owner discussion pools. Owner anecdotes were used to form inspection and safety questions, never failure rates. Price was checked September 17, 2026. Where a claim came from a retailer demonstration, the article says so.

The buying decision

Buy Hobby for the compact manual machine it actually is

Bezzera Hobby 01 combines a narrow body, substantial conventional group, large reservoir and steam capability that stands out at its checked price. Its weakness is equally clear: thermostat state and the single-boiler reset remain the operator’s responsibility.

I would choose it for one or two drinks when manual timing is welcome and the grinder budget remains protected. I would pay more for Profitec GO when recorded temperature and pressure matter, or move to a dual boiler when a milk-drink queue defines the morning.
